Three games into his New York Yankees career and Jazz Chisholm Jr. has already made a lasting impression on the fans. The recently acquired All-Star was in the thick of the action during Tuesday's thriller against the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Yankees were up against the best team in MLB this season at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday, hoping to win a second successive series after an emphatic victory in the series opener.
While Chisholm Jr. gave the Bronx Bombers the lead in the first inning, Austin Hays' first home run for the Phillies in the second inning turned around the score 4-1 in favor of the hosts.
But Jazz Chisholm Jr. came to the rescue for the team with two home runs in consecutive innings to turn the game on its head. His contribution was a crucial factor in the Yankees' win in extra innings to clinch the series.
Following the series win, Chisholm Jr. said:
"I'm having the most fun in the world right now. I feel like a kid out there again."
Jazz Chisholm Jr. has four home runs in his three games for the Yankees, including back-to-back multi-homer games. He is only the second player in MLB history to register four home runs in three games for a new franchise.
"This is what I live for. I love the lights. I love the big crowds. I love everything like that. So it's super exciting. I'm enjoying it," Chisholm Jr. said on being a Yankee.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. willing to go the distance for the Yankees
Jazz Chisholm Jr. made an electric start to his MLB career and the Yankees are thriving off his energy in the diamond. The All-Star slugger, who has seamlessly slotted in as a third baseman after making his Yankees debut in the outfield, wants the team to believe in his offensive abilities.
“I want the guys to believe in me and trust me to make every play, to go up there and help them,” Chisholm said. “Every time I go up to the plate, I want them to know I’m going to go up there and do something for us to win. I’m going to play my heart out."
The Yankees bullpen also did their part, especially Mark Leiter Jr., who signed from the Chicago Cubs ahead of the second game of the series. The debutant held his nerve in the tenth inning with the bases loaded as teammate Michael Tonkin earned the win after getting the final out of the game in the 12th.
