In December, during the last day of MLB's Winter Meetings, the Boston Red Sox acquired Garrett Crochet through a trade with the Chicago White Sox. Boston sent Kyle Teel, Braden Montgomery, Chase Meidroth, and Wikelman Gonzalez Chicago's way for the hard-throwing lefty.
On Saturday, Boston helped introduce their newest pitcher to the fanbase. It was the first time fans got to see Crochet rocking the iconic red and white jersey.
Crochet will continue to work as a starting pitcher in Boston. He is coming off his first full season as a starter with the White Sox, and he certainly was one of the few shining spots on that roster.
However, some Boston fans are not too thrilled to see their newest starting pitcher. They would much rather see the club go out and sign Alex Bregman and introduce him.
"I don't give a sh*t sign Bregman" one fan posted.
"Poor guy. He should demand a trade!" said another.
"Spend money pls" said another.
Garrett Crochet just does not move the needle for some of these fans. However, not everybody feels the same way about the flamethrower.
"Now sign him to a multi-year extension" said another.
"We are so back!" said another.
"El Cy Young 2025" said another.
Red Sox looking to keep Garrett Crochet beyond 2026
Garrett Crochet should have a big impact on the Red Sox rotation in 2025. He is an elite talent who is still working on his game and has the opportunity to be a potential Cy Young Award winner.
In 2024, he made 32 starts, compiling a 6-12 record with a 3.58 ERA while striking out 209 batters in 146 innings. While his record was not all that great, he was playing on a historically bad team.
Boston expects big things out of the lefty going forward. So much so, they are trying to work with him on getting a contract extension done.
Per MasLive.com's Sean McAdam, Boston spent last week beginning a dialogue with those in Crochet's camp. The aim is to get a contract extension done and keep him around beyond the 2026 season.
For the prospects they gave up, it only makes sense for the club to want to get an extension done. It will be interesting to see if the two sides can come to an agreement and when.
