One of the reasons why the New York Yankees brought in Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Miami Marlins ahead of the trade deadline is his versatility to play anywhere on the field. With the Marlins, Chisholm played center field and second baseman but has experience playing all spots in the infield. In his debut game with the Yankees, he filled center field.
Following Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox, which the Yankees won 8-2, Chisholm talked about learning to play third base for the Yankees given the team's struggles in terms of production from the hot corner.
"I mean, I went out there and played CF for the first time last year, and I felt like it was pretty difficult at first, but I just feel like I could go and play anywhere and help my team win.
"For me, it's just going somewhere. Especially a winning team, and they're asking me to go somewhere to help them win? I'm definitely gonna go out there and do it," Chisholm Jr. said via Gary Philips.
The Yankees are struggling for production from third base with DJ LeMahieu (.176 and one home run) in his worst slump of his career. Oswaldo Cabrera (.246 and six home runs) has also not impressed on offense this year.
That might prompt the Yankees to fill in their third base weakness by having Jazz Chisholm play there.
Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s trade to the Yankees is official
On Sunday, the Yankees acquired Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Miami Marlins, who received catcher Agustin Ramirez infielder Jared Serna and infielder Abrahan Ramirez in exchange.
The Yankees players are excited with the latest acquisition. Captain Aaron Judge finds him a "dynamic" player who can play anywhere with added attributes of speed and power.
Manager, Aaron Boone praised his defensive versatility and the energy with which he plays.
“Baseball is baseball. I love playing baseball, so I'm going to go out there and love playing the sport every day,” Jazz Chisholm Jr. said after the trade.
On his Yankees debut, the centerfielder went 1-5 and scored a run in the win. The Yankees will hope to use his defensive strengths to fill holes in their batting lineup.
