Kansas City Royals pitcher Brady Singer made his debut during the 2020 season. Scouts were excited to see what he could do in the big leagues, but not many believed he would have as much success as he did early on.
In his ninth start, he was matched up against the Cleveland Guardians and kept them on their toes. He kept Cleveland's lineup hitless for 8.2 innings but gave up the no-hitter with just four outs left.
Austin Hedges was the one who ruined the no-hitter as he hit a single through the shifted infield. It was an unfortunate situation for the youngster, but that is how the game goes sometimes and Brady reflected on that following the game.
"I honestly kind of blacked out," Singer said. "I saw him get jammed, I saw it kind of get him on the handle. I don't know who was playing there. I didn't turn around and see what the shift was, honestly. But it snuck through. That''s how the game works," said Singer.
Hedges was able to find an opening, something that might not have happened if the game was played with today's rules. Shift restrictions limit teams from creating holes in the infield.
"It was probably a bad thing, but I kind of noticed there was no hits after the third inning. So it was stressful, but I felt sharp from pitch one and tried to stay focused the whole time," said Singer.
Singer mentioned that he noticed early on that he had the chance to do something special. That and being 116 pitches deep into his outing may have resulted in the full-count fastball hedges was able to get a hold of.
Brady Singer was a few pitches away from making magic happen
Kansas City Royals pitcher Brady Singer was so close to making history happen. If he were to complete the no-hitter, he would have been the 36th rookie to throw one.
"I just thought it was going to be a special night," said manager Mike Matheny. "I was right, but unfortunately, it was just short of being as special as we wanted"
Since then, Brady has flirted with no-hitters, taking one into the seventh inning against the Seattle Mariners last season. He has the stuff to do it, he just needs to put it all together and have some luck on his side.
