It was an eventful night for the New York Mets and Jorge Lopez on Wednesday. The pitcher was ejected from the game, tossed his glove into the stands, and took shots at his club.
He called his club "the worst team" in the league to reporters following the game. Shortly after that, he was designated for assignment, with manager Carlos Mendoza pointing to the team's standards.
Lopez had a night to reflect on his actions and came out with a statement. It seems the hard-throwing righty understands what he did wrong, but now it is too late.
"First and foremost, I apologize to my teammates, coaches, fans, and front office. I feel that I let them down yesterday, both on and off the field," Lopez said.
Lopez started his statement by apologizing to his teammates, coaches, fans, and front office. He then went on to clarify what he said to reporters following Wednesday's events:
"I also want to clarify my post-game remarks, because I had no intention of disparaging the New York Mets organization. During that interview, I spoke candidly about my frustrations with my personal performance and how I felt it made me 'the worst teammate in the entire league."
Lopez said that he never meant to make disparaging comments about the Mets. He was instead talking about how he was the "worst teammate in the entire league."
Jorge Lopez wishes nothing but the best for the Mets
Jorge Lopez went on to explain that in his post-game interview, he created some confusion while trying to conduct it in English. He said that what he said did not reflect what he was trying to say:
"Unfortunately, my efforts to address the media in English created some confusion and generated headlines that do not reflect what I was trying to express."
There does not seem to be any bad blood between the two sides. Lopez understands his wrongs and wishes nothing but the best for the club going forward:
"I wish the team the best and hope that God continues to give me strength and guidance in my personal and professional life."
It will be interesting to see what is in store for Lopez in the future. He certainly has the talent to be on a big-league roster.
