The Los Angeles Dodgers have retained Tommy Edman on their roster for next season after tying him up with a five-year, $72 million contract extension this week. Edman expressed his delight after completing the deal, saying that he wanted to remain with the Dodgers since joining them at the trade deadline and that it's the best situation for him and his family.
Tommy Edman proved to be a key trade deadline acquisition for the Dodgers in their run to the World Series crown as an utility player. He was invaluable to the team with his defensive versatility while also making a solid impact with the bat. He hit .328/.354/.508 in the postseason with two home runs and 13 RBIs, besides winning the National League Championship Series MVP.
"I knew I wanted to be here for a long time once I got traded here," Edman told Dodger Nation.
"It's the ideal situation for myself and my family. So, I was really excited when I found out that they were interested in an extension as well. And I'm glad we got it done relatively early in the off-season."
Edman had signed a two-year, $16.5 million extension with the St. Louis Cardinals at the start of the year. However, he was shut down in spring training due to a wrist injury, which later landed him on the 60-day IL.
Nevertheless, the Los Angeles Dodgers signed him in a three-team trade deal at the deadline, and it proved to be an inspired decision from the front office.
A happy Thanksgiving for Tommy Edman
During his interview with Dodgers Nation, Tommy Edman also spoke on his Thanksgiving Day experience this year. The Los Angeles Dodgers showed their appreciation for the player by offering him a lucrative contract extension the next day:
"It was great," he said. "Got some good quality family time. Ate a lot of turkey. And obviously, had a great day yesterday when I found I'm going to be here for five years."
Therefore, Edman is likely to remain an important piece of this team for the foreseeable future. Although the Dodgers have several superstars on their roster, his versatility on the field allows them to put up their strongest lineup without harming the balance of the team.
