Miguel Rojas' resurgence couldn't have arrived better for the Los Angeles Dodgers. With two of their start shortstops out, the Venezuelan has been more than effective in the position and has almost made him irreplaceable. Rojas announced his retirement plans on Wednesday and without any surprise, it involved the Dodgers.
Miguel Rojas spent most of his MLB career with the Miami Marlins after being traded by the Dodgers in 2014. In 2023, he returned to LA and was immediately pushed into action due to Gavin Lux's injury.
After a .236 season at the plate, the Dodgers decided to push Mookie Betts into the shortstop role but after his injury layoff, Rojas found game time as a replacement for the injured All-Star. The 35-year-old has batted .284/.330/.426 with 21 RBIs on 52 hits and 20 extra base hits. Defensively he has managed six outs above average which ranks as a 95 percentile in all of MLB.
Miguel Rojas spoke to Doug McKain on Dodgers Dugout Live about his goals.
“I would like to retire as a Dodger,” Rojas said. “I want to play at least two more years, and hopefully — and obviously — I want to play for the Dodgers and I want to finish my career here.”
The shortstop also announced his desire to coach the team in his post-playing days with a possible stint as an MLB manager.
“Another thing that I want to do is stay in as a coach with the team after I’m done playing,” Rojas said to Dodgers Nation, “so that’s something that I’m kind of putting together. My goal is to manage one day.”
Will Miguel Rojas be signed to a two-year extension by Dodgers?
Currently, Miguel Rojas is signed to a one-year contract by Los Angeles with the possibility of a club option for 2025. If picked, which is likely at this current juncture, the Dodgers will have to pay $5 million to acquire his services.
Although looking at his current vein of form, it wouldn't surprise many if Rojas requests a pay raise and instead signs a new two-year deal with the club. Rojas' importance for the Dodgers can be marked by the fact that the team went 24-0 in games the veteran shortstop registered a hit. However, that remarkable streak ended last month with a walk-off loss against the Giants.
