On Friday, in a Q&A session by the Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Francisco Lindor expressed his desire to share the field with Juan Soto. More than that, he hoped for a record-breaking deal for Soto, which experts speculate could be worth $500 million or more.
While Yankees fans in the Bronx chant for Juan Soto’s re-signing, Mets fans in Queens are focused on the upcoming offseason, where they could potentially sign Soto. However, neither the New York Yankees nor the Mets are sure about what’s on the Dominican All-Star’s mind.
“What I said about Soto is that I would love for him to break every (financial) record out there. I would love him to go out there and get what he deserves. If he’s with us, amazing. If he’s with somebody else, amazing, too, as long as he gets what he deserves,” Lindor said (via - The Athletic).
As of Friday, the Mets are 70-64 and stand third in the NL East Division. Meanwhile, the Yankees are the first team to register 80 wins in the American League, leading their AL East division and might get a bye for the postseason.
Juan Soto’s free agency speculation
Juan Soto has proved to be a geography-free player, earning All-Star nods in Washington (2021), San Deigo (2023) and now in New York (2024), making him a valuable player for any team.
While the Bronx Bombers is likely to offer an extension to Soto, the increasing demand might lead him to explore free agency for the first time in his career. Experts around the league have speculated that his potential contract could be worth a substantial amount, with most agreeing over a $500 million multi-year deal.
“Thirteen experts polled by The Post predict, on average, that Yankees slugging superstar Juan Soto will land a record $520.09 million contract,” Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported.
The range varies from “[Mike] Trout's contract” (12-year, $426.5 million) to $600 million with his yearly salary surpassing Shohei Ohtani ($70 million/year) with a tenure of 10 to 12 years.
