Following a rough 2023 season with the New York Yankees (6.65 ERA), Luis Severino signed a one-year deal with their cross-town rivals, the New York Mets. He is having a good comeback season, sporting a 3.91 ERA and going 8-6 after 24 starts. This is the highest number of starts since 2018, when he started 32 games.

Severino will be entering free agency next offseason and while many teams want his services, he was upfront about wanting to stay with the Mets during a conversation with MLB insider Jon Heyman.

"I mean, I love the Mets, I love the people that are there. I think we have a great team there, we have great communication, but at the end of the day, you know, there is a business side that I can't control. I let my agent take care of that, but like you said, you know, I love being with the Mets. I love the Mets, I love the people that surround the Mets," Severino told Heyman.
"I got a chance to talk with David Stern, he's a great guy too. Hopefully, you know, at the end of the year, we can have this conversation and be, you know, more days with the Mets or, you know, whatever happens, happens. The main thing is that I have to be grateful for the things that they're doing for me."

Luis Severino pitches a complete game against the Marlins

Last Saturday, Luis Severino pitched a complete-game shutout, the second of his career, in a 4-0 victory for the Mets against the Miami Marlins. He struck out eight hitters while only allowing one walk.

Manager Carlos Mendoza spoke about Severino's pitching marvel while also adding how the veteran wanted to pitch a complete game despite already pitching 94 pitches by the eighth inning.

“I wanted to see how he was feeling,” said Mendoza. “He just looked me in the eye and said he was good. I wanted to make sure. I wanted him to be honest. I told him, ‘Give me everything you’ve got.’”

If the Mets hang on and claim a postseason spot, there's a chance Luis Severino gets to pitch against the Yankees and help his team in their bid to win it all.
