After the Kansas City Chiefs toppled the Buffalo Bills in the AFC championship game on Sunday, MLB and NFL fans exchanged tirades on social media platforms like X and Reddit regarding the salary cap and lack thereof of the other. The Chiefs outlasted the Bills in a 32-29 thriller and are set to face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX—their second meeting in three years.
One particular MLB fanbase that's in the crosshairs of fellow baseball fans is the LA Dodgers. The team had an enviable offseason wherein it acquired stars such as Blake Snell and Roki Sasaki just a year removed from handing out $700 million to modern-day G.O.A.T Shohei Ohtani.
A fan humorously wrote on Reddit about parity in the league in comparison with that of the NFL.
"I’m done watching football, it’s unfair, they need a salary cap," said one fan on Reddit.
"People complain about baseball and say the NFL is so much better, yet you have the same team in the Superbowl 3 years in a row and the other team 2 of the last 3 years," another wrote.
"Because in the MLB, the control of your teams success isn’t highly dependent on refereeing. We’ve seen multiple times this season a win fall in the hands of KC because of horrendous calls. The Dodgers just buy everyone. Big difference," claimed one fan.
"Did you include ref salary? Not sure what the chiefs pay," a fan boldly stated.
Leading the charge of the MLB contingent on X was Justin Verlander's brother, Ben. The analyst had the same sentiments as the Reddit users who aired their grievances about the supposed "disparity" in baseball.
"People will really complain about the Dodgers signing everyone and cry for a Salary Cap while watching the Chiefs go to the Super Bowl every year," Verlander wrote.
One fan jokingly suggested not to compare the Dodgers and Chiefs as they're not in a similar situation.
"Don’t ever compare us to the chiefs, umps don’t help us out that much lmao," a fan stated.
NFL fans debunk MLB insider's hot take
The argument between baseball and football fans stemmed from the NFL having a salary cap compared to baseball, which has none and has a more lenient hand in terms of team spending.
NFL fans immediately debunked Verlander's take by stating that there's a stark difference between the Chiefs' development system compared to the Dodgers and the importance of skill position players in each league.
"One takes genius team building and elite scouting. The other takes being rich. These are not the same," one fan expressed support for the Chiefs.
"Apple to Oranges comparison," a fan wrote.
"You can’t compare the two at all Benny boy lmao this isn’t a knock on the dodgers they do what they do but the chiefs these past few years aren’t buying their whole lineup off the free agent market," a fan stated.
Whichever side of the fence it may be, there are clear differences between how the fundamentals of the sport work in the MLB and NFL. At the end of the day, however, it all ultimately boils down to who can perform during important game situations.
