The New York Yankees went out and got their hands on Miami Marlins star Jazz Chisholm Jr. ahead of the trade deadline. However, the latest Yankees acquisition could brew trouble for second baseman Gleyber Torres.
Torres, after enduring a tough couple of months at the plate, started showing life in the recently concluded series against the Red Sox. The two-time All-Star had three hits in the series opener, albeit in a losing cause. But he came in clutch in the second game as his two-run double took the Yankees home in a thrilling finale.
He had another two-RBI night at Fenway Park on Sunday as the Yankees clinched a much-needed series victory over their division rivals. While Torres has started producing from second base the Yankees are exploring the idea of moving Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second and Torres to third.
Torres isn't too keen on the idea.
"I'm a second baseman. I play second," Torres said.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. arrived just in time for the Yankees' rubber game against their fierce rivals on Sunday. He started in center field and batted fifth but is open to playing in other positions to help out the team.
Aaron Boone understands Gleyber Torres' reluctance to move to third base
Meanwhile, Yankees manager Aaron Boone is aware of Gleyber Torres' objection to possibly moving to third base, something the 27-year-old hasn't done since his minor league days.
Boone feels it would be easier for the team to move Chisholm Jr. to a different position without disrupting players like Torres from their usual positions on the field.
“When we look up in two weeks, three weeks, four weeks, hopefully we’re in a spot where we’re really comfortable with where guys are on the field,” Boone said per the New York Post.
“Jazz has been playing center field now for a while. I feel like maybe a little easier to transition him to a new position than having two guys go to newer positions. But I’m going to be open to a lot of things.”
Jazz Chisholm Jr. adds another dimension to the Yankees offense because of his dynamic base-stealing ability with fearsome hitters like Aaron Judge and Juan Soto at the plate.
Gleyber Torres' recent upturn in production is also a much-needed respite for the team aiming to get back the winning mentality it displayed at the start of the season.
