Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso have been teammates on the New York Mets for quite a while now. Nimmo has been there since 2016 while Alonso stormed onto the scene in 2019.
So, it makes sense that Nimmo does not want to see Alonso leave in free agency. However, with the way talks have been going with the Amazins' the likelihood of him re-signing seems slim.
Despite the way the talks have gone, Nimmo believes his team can still find a way to sign Alonso. During Amazin' Day, the slugger spoke to reporters about how he wants this situation to play out.
"I would love to see Pete [Alonso] back with us, but I also understand that I don't make those decisions and that's between Pete and our front office," said Nimmo.
Nimmo understands that these decisions are above his pay grade, but there is no denying how much Alonso means to the Mets. However, if they cannot re-sign him, Nimmo is still happy about what the club has done this winter.
"From what I understand, there have been a lot of talks between them. I'm still hopeful that we'll sign him, but even if so, we're really happy about what we have done this offseason. I think we made our team a better team" said Nimmo.
Brandon Nimmo opens up about a 2020 conversation with the Mets' front office on sustainability
Back in 2020, Brandon Nimmo sat down with Steve and Alex Cohen for a conversation. The Cohens invited players into their homes after they bought the team, asking them how to make this team better and how the club could sustain success for years to come.
"[Steve and Alex Cohen] were so gracious. Once they bought the team, they had us to their house, each individual player and asked us, 'How can we make this organization better and one that succeeds on a regular basis and somewhere that players want to come and be at?" said Nimmo.
Now, with Juan Soto acquired, Nimmo feels like this team has finally come full circle. He feels like they are a prime destination for free agents and is excited for what is to come.
With or without Pete Alonso, this is a team fans will want to keep a close eye on. They have the talent and the encouragement to be a contender in 2025 and beyond.
