It was a great night for Carlos Rodon as the right-handed ace led the New York Yankees to their 47th victory of the season. It’s his 14th start and with only one earned run in seven innings against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium, Rodon now has a 2.93 ERA in 80 innings this season.
Even Rodon himself was impressed with his performance during his matchup with the Royals’ Nelson Velazquez in the seventh inning when he struck him out with a 96 mph fastball.
While there hasn't been confirmation from Rodon on this, having been together for six years now, it's easy for Ashley, his wife, to read her husband's lips. She claimed what he said in the game on social media.
“I’m pretty sure he just said “that was disgusting” about his own pitch,” Ashley tweeted.
After last year’s 6.85 ERA performance, he rebounded well this season and has been managing the rotation well in the absence of Gerrit Cole.
Meanwhile, the Yankees bullpen finished the game with only one conceded run, giving Carlos Rodon another win as the Yankees won the game 4-2 against the Royals.
Carlos Rodon credited the Yankees’ offense for his outing
Carlos Rodon has been one of the Yankees' top pitchers this year with a 2.93 ERA in 14 starts, pitching in 80 innings with a 1.05 WHIP and 74 strikeouts. He credited all to the Yankees’ offense and fielding to ease his situation, which helped him to focus on the game better.
“You know, offense showing up early, scoring some early runs, made it easy to attack the zone,” Rodon told Yes Network in the post-game interview.
“Then defensively, you know, turns in double plays, made some great plays in the outfield, and then DJ [LeMahieu], heck of a play at first. So you had, you know, defensively they had my back. Offensively they had my back. And Trevi and I just went and just pitched and let everything else happen.”
With this success, the Yankees took the lead in the road series against the Royals, and now have a 47-21 season record, the best in the AL and the league overall. On Tuesday, the Yankees’ new ace, Marcus Stroman, is expected to start the game and continue his team’s successful campaign.
