Cincinnati Reds infielder Gavin Lux is prepared to emulate World Series MVP Freddie Freeman this upcoming season.

In an appearance on MLB Network on Wednesday, Lux discussed his feelings and expectations for this upcoming season as a member of the Reds. In particular, host Harold Reynolds asked Lux if his experience with the LA Dodgers, specifically the time spent with stars like Freeman, Shohei Ohtani, and Mookie Betts, could influence Lux’s approach.

“I played with Mookie and Freddie for three, four years," Lux said (Timestamp: 4:22). "I think I took a lot from all those guys, but I think, Freddie’s first year was 2022, I was probably annoying him them, watching him, and literally sitting down watching his cage routine, go out and watch his BP routine, his defense routine.”

Lux’s comments are a testament to the respect an accomplished ballplayer like Freeman commands. Lux underscored his comments by saying:

“I’m trying to do whatever Freddie does because, you know, he’s about as good as a left-handed hitter you can be. Hits for power does damage, gets hits, controls the strike zone, like, this is the ultimate left-handed hitter.”

Lux will get a chance to play in one of the Majors’ most talented lineups, featuring emerging superstar Elly De La Cruz. With Lux’s experience and De La Cruz’s talents, the Reds could become a force to be reckoned with in 2025.

Gavin Lux to play wherever needed

In a Sports Illustrated piece published on Wednesday, Gavin Lux talked about his willingness to play any position that’s needed on the Reds. While Lux was predominantly a second baseman with the LA Dodgers, he’s willing to play any role to help the team.

"I've played a ton of second base, a good amount of left field, came up as a shortstop, and played there a bunch in 2021 when Seager got hurt,” Lux said. "Those three positions, I am pretty comfortable at...I'll play wherever these guys need me to play to help win.”

That versatility is something the Reds will need heading into this season. Lux doubled down on his feelings by saying:

"If I have enough time and heads up, I can be ready to play wherever these guys need me."

The willingness and dedication to play will become crucial as the Reds look to turn things around from a largely disappointing 2024 season. The Reds finished 77-85, 16 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers.

But optimism reigns in Cincinnati with De La Cruz, Lux, and manager Terry Francona leading the way. 2025 could prove to be an exciting year for Reds’ fans, hoping their ballclub can return to October baseball.
