Infielder Gleyber Torres signed a one-year, $15 million contract with the Detroit Tigers on Friday and has since revealed that he didn't receive any offer from the New York Yankees.

The 28-year-old entered free agency this winter after spending seven years in New York and helping them to the World Series last year. In an introductory press conference with the Tigers, Torres was asked whether the Yankees had pursued him aggressively in free agency. He responded:

"No, not really. We did not have many conversations, just my agent, and their group passed information back and forth a few times, but I didn't really have any offer from them.
"Literally, after the World Series, I got a letter and a phone call from other teams. I feel like I have to play where somebody wants to give the best for me. I just want to be available to give my best for team. I got great friends there, great communication with the organization, and I feel proud of myself for being with the Yankees for seven years. But now I'm with Detroit and just really happy they gave me the opportunity to play next year."

Gleyber Torres had signed with the Chicago Cubs as an international free agent in 2013 but was traded to the New York Yankees in 2016. He made his major league debut with them in 2018 and was a regular in their lineup over the past few years.

In 2024, Torres slashed .257/.330/.708 over 154 games with 15 home runs and 63 RBI. He was a major contributor in their postseason run to the World Series as well. However, it's clear that the Yankees front office didn't have any plans of re-signing him this winter. Instead, they have added some new bats in their lineup for next year.
