While Aaron Judge is known to be a fun-loving person, he left one Little League team hurt last Sunday. The Yankees star visited Lamade Stadium over the weekend, met with Little League teams and engaged with future baseball stars.
However, the Staten Island Little League team didn't get a meet-and-greet session with Judge, which made their coach Bob Laterza upset. In a report published by the Staten Island Advance on Monday, Laterza mentioned a moment during MLB's Little League Classic where his young players were chanting Judge's name only to be left disappointed at Bowman Field.
“How about turning around or wave to New York and the kids that think you’re a hero?” Laterza said. “They are the ones who pay your salary. They were disappointed. Maybe he’ll want to make up for it and come and see them.”
On Wednesday, the media asked Judge for his response to those remarks.
“I’ve got no response for that,” Judge said. “I’m not gonna give him a response because it’s about the kids. This is what it’s all about."
“We got a chance to spend a lot of time with quite a few kids in Williamsport, make some great memories. Had a great time at the game, you know, besides a loss. So I kind of want that to be the focus,” he added.
Yankees and manager Aaron Boone speak up on unnecessary backlash faced by Aaron Judge
While Judge opted to remain silent on the issue, manager Aaron Boone issued further clarification in defense of his captain.
“I’m not even going to dignify that with a response,” Boone said. “Aaron Judge is as good as it gets with everyone.”
The Yankees also released a statement regarding their Little League Classic appearance.
“Our entire roster spent the day in Williamsport connecting with as many Little Leaguers as they possibly could, including the team from Staten Island,” the statement said.
Laterza said that he acknowledged the presence of other players, like Gerrit Cole, who met with their team and even engaged in some Q&As. However, it was Judge with whom they also wanted to spend some time.
