The Baltimore Orioles called up their top prospect, Jackson Holliday, for another opportunity to showcase his skills at the big league level. He did not disappoint in his first game back on Wednesday, getting a huge monkey off his back.
In the fifth inning, Holliday stepped up the plate with the bases loaded. He waited on his pitch and got every stitch of the baseball, hitting a 109.2 rocket for a grand slam.
This was the slugger's first big-league home run, and it was an absolute blast. This is a great sign, as MLB analyst Dan Pleasac believes Holliday was pressing at the plate during his initial call-up.
"He just seemed to me, Tom, like a guy searching for an answer, and I don't want to say he was overmatched at the big-league level, I just think the game was going a million miles an hour and he couldn't slow it down," said Pleasac.
Holliday has a huge ceiling, being the league's top prospect, and he has gotten tons of comparisons since being drafted. MLB insider Tom Verducci compared him to perhaps one of the greatest third basemen of all time.
"This guy's got tremendous talent, though. My comp for him, when I watch him swing his bat, his barrel awareness, is Chipper Jones from the left side. I see a lot of similarities in the setup and swing," said Verducci.
That is quite the comparison. Both sluggers have simple swings at the plate but can generate so much power behind it.
Orioles slugger Jackson Holliday was reunited with his milestone baseball
Jackson Holliday's first home run ended up making its way to Eutaw Street. It was the seventh Eutaw Street home run of the season and was secured by a young fan with his father.
After the game, the father-son duo met with Holliday so they could return the milestone baseball. Holliday handed the youngster a signed bat, and the group chatted for a few moments.
It was a special moment, as that kid will remember this interaction for the rest of his life. Holliday must find a good spot to showcase that ball in his house, as not much is more special than your first MLB home run.
All it takes is one to see a hitter get going in this league. Do not be surprised if he starts to get hot.
