As we head closer to the new year, the market for third baseman Alex Bregman is getting smaller. MLB insider Mark Feinsand has named two AL teams - the Red Sox and the Tigers - as probable destinations.
Bregman has almost a decade of experience playing in the majors and has plenty left to offer as he looks for a new team in free agency. On MLB Tonight on Sunday, Feinsand gave his take on Bregman's free agency (0:19):
"When you look at the teams that are still in the market for third base, the Yankees keep getting brought up. I don't see them being interested enough after spending the money they've spent already.
"The two teams I would look at are the Red Sox and the Tigers. The Tigers is an obvious connection with AJ Hinch there. He managed him in Houston, they need a third baseman' it would be a very good fit. The question is whether or not Detroit is willing to spend the money it's going to take to sign him.
He continued:
"Boston, kind of the same thing. We know they have money to spend... the question is do they want to bring in Bregman, move Devers to first, maybe use Casas as a trade chip. Because if not ... there's not really a fit for Bregman. So there's some other pieces that have to move around before Boston becomes really a team in play."
Alex Bregman was selected by the Houston Astros in the 2015 MLB Draft and made major league debut with them the following year. Since then, he has won two World Series titles and made two All-Star appearances .
Despite Feinsand's comments on Bregman's market, many fans want the Yankees to sign him to solve their third base problem. However, there will be interest from other teams as well. While there has been no concrete developments yet, there's time before the next season starts.
Astros GM Dana Brown opens up on Alex Bregman negotiations
Having signed first baseman Christian Walker earlier this week, the Houston Astros front office all but confirmed that there would be no reunion with Alex Bregman. General manager Dana Brown has explained the reason behind their move:
“The way I view it now is that Isaac Peredes is going to plate 3rd base and Christian Walker will play first base. The negotiations stalled. I thought we made a competitive offer in showing that we wanted him (Alex Bregman) back.”
While Bregman and the Astros failed to reach an agreement, it remains to be seen which MLB team spends the money to sign him.
