Matt Kemp might not be a name that some of the younger baseball fans know, but through the majority of his career, he was an institution for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Kemp's best seasons of his career came in Dodgers uniform, earning all three of his All-Star selections with the club. Of these three, his most surprising and potentially rewarding came in 2018.
After nine seasons serving as the Dodgers superstar outfielder, Kemp was traded to the San Diego Padres and later to the Atlanta Braves in 2015 and 2016. Following the 2017 season, Kemp's career came full circle after returning to Los Angeles when he was in the twilight of his career
After making his way back to the Dodgers, there was no guarantee that Kemp would make the Opening Day roster. However, it quickly became clear that the star was going to be in the lineup for the first game at Dodger Stadium in 2018.
“You couldn’t see under those glasses, but I had tears coming down my eyes,” Kemp told Dodger Insider magazine. "It was probably one of the most amazing moments that I ever had in a Dodger uniform."
This is quite the idea because, during his peak with the club, Kemp was one of the top players in the MLB. What made 2018 even more special was the fact that Matt Kemp earned the final All-Star selection of his career.
Following his 2018 campaign with the Dodgers, Kemp played another 63 games in the MLB, spending brief stints with the Cincinnati Reds and Colorado Rockies and minor league deals with the Miami Marlins and New York Mets. Despite an abrupt end to his MLB career, he was Hollywood through and through during his peak.
Matt Kemp will be honored during Dodger Alumni Weekend
This upcoming weekend, a number of Dodgers alumni will make their way back to Dodger Stadium. The club will celebrate nearly 40 members who played pivotal roles in the team's history, including Kemp, who will be honored with "Matt Kemp Day" on Sunday.
The festivities will kick off on Friday with former Dodgers outfielder and, more recently, Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker being inducted into the Legends of Dodger Baseball. Former owner Walter F. O'Malley will also be honored by the club this weekend. It will be a time to remember for the franchise, their fans and former All-Star outfielder Matt Kemp.
