The New York Yankees didn't make the huge blockbuster deals that many thought they might. After a brutal stretch that involved a 6-16 run, the Yankees made two main trades.
The Yankees brought in Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Miami Marlins a few days before the trade deadline and finished up with the addition of Mark Leiter Jr. from the Chicago Cubs. They also sent Caleb Ferguson to the Houston Astros for international bonus pool money. Other than that, it was a moderately quiet July 31 for the Yankees.
General manager Brian Cashman thinks the team was good and got even better with the moves they made.
"I like what we had before we made the moves, and I know we've improved since these moves. That's all I can say. I think we have a really good team already. It'll get better, obviously, over the course of time when some guys come back from the IL. I think with the imports, too, we've made it better. That's always the effort," Cashman said.
Yankees' trade additions paying immediate dividends
Jazz Chisholm Jr. went hitless in his first three at-bats in his Yankee debut, a series finale against the Boston Red Sox. He singled in the infield, stole a base and scored in the win.
He immediately caught fire from then on, blasting two straight two-homer games and becoming the first player in Yankee history to debut with such numbers. His offense and defensive versatility immediately transformed the roster.
Mark Leiter Jr. was a later addition, but he was crucial. Seeking a series win on the road against the MLB-leading Philadelphia Phillies, he entered the bottom of the 10th after a blown save and a scoreless top half. With the ghost runner, he needed to prevent anyone from scoring or the game was over.
He did that incredibly considering he wasn't on the team six hours earlier. They secured a huge series win with 7-6 victory.
