The Los Angeles Dodgers continued their winning run after the 2024 All-Star break to sweep the Boston Red Sox. Shohei Ohtani's remarkable debut season for his new team reached a new high during Sunday's game at Dodger Stadium.
The Japanese superstar got hold of Red Sox starter Kutter Crawford's fastball in the fifth inning to send a solo shot over right field. Ohtani's home run was measured at 116.7 mph off the bat and it went 473 feet. The ball eventually made it out of Dodger Stadium after bouncing in the stands.
Veteran Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw, who was watching the action unfold in the dugout, was rendered speechless by the two-time MVP's jaw-dropping solo home run.
When asked if he had ever witnessed a ball hit like that at Dodger Stadium, Kershaw had the following to say:
“No I don’t think so. That was amazing... Some of the righties can hit them out that way but for a lefty to go up there, I’m speechless. I’ve never seen that before.”
"Shohei Ohtani’s 473 foot home run flew between the roof and the Daiso sign in left center field, according the fans in the area. It then had enough velocity to surpass the concourse and land in the walkway in Centerfield Plaza. This is where it flew through and the ball."
Shohei Ohtani's solo hit ensures that the $700 million Dodgers signing became the first player to breach 30 home runs in the National League this season and the second player in MLB behind New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge.
Ohtani's moonshot meant that the Japanese superstar slugger has now registered 30 home runs in four consecutive seasons, three for his former team, the Los Angeles Angels.
Shohei Ohtani helps Dodgers to sweep Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox took an early 2-0 lead in the game as the visitors arrived at the ballpark with hopes of avoiding a sweep. However, the Dodgers hit back instantly as the scores ended 2-2 after the first inning.
It turned out to be an onslaught by the hosts after the first inning as the Dodgers scored six unanswered runs by the fifth inning to turn around the game. Despite a late fight from the Red Sox hitters, the Dodgers completed a 9-6 win to seal the sweep.
