The New York Yankees claimed the series against the Chicago Cubs after a shutout victory on Saturday, making it two wins on the trot for the Bronx Bombers. However, Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes Jr. wasn't too pleased with his modified role during the second game of the series.
The Yankees starter was moved to the bullpen as Clarke Schmidt returned to the mound and started for the team for the first time since May 26 after recovering from a lat injury.
Despite helping the Yankees shut out the Cubs for a second consecutive game, Cortes Jr. had some strong words in his post-game comments.
He said:
“Obviously, I was upset. I feel like amongst all the starters, I’ve been the workhorse here. Once [Gerrit] Cole went down, they picked me to be the Opening Day starter; not necessarily the No. 1, but the Opening Day starter. I had to switch my routine there, and now they do this."
Although the Yankees hurler wasn't too pleased with his new role, Cortes, who has pitched the most for the Bronx Bombers this season, is willing to do whatever it takes to help the team.
"But I’m never going to back down from a challenge. I’m never going to leave my teammates out to dry. You’re always going to get my best effort no matter if I’m happy or not. That’s what I did today. I came out there and proved I can be put in any situation. From here on out, if that’s my role, then I’ll accept it.”
Aaron Boone takes pride in Nestor Cortes' professionalism in new role
The Yankees bullpen has been under pressure of late, especially reliever Clay Holmes, who has led the MLB in blown saves this season. Nestor Cortes Jr.'s latest effort is a big boost for Yankees manager Aaron Boone, who appreciated his pitcher, despite his comments.
“It’s just a testament to being a professional,” Aaron Boone said. “I’m sure he wasn’t thrilled about it this turn around. But you still got a job to do and he went and excelled at it.”
Clarke Schmidt pitched 4.2 innings on his return and was bailed out by Nestor Cortes in the fifth inning with a runner on third with two outs. The two teams will meet for the series finale on Sunday with the Yankees hoping to consolidate on their slender leader over AL East rivals the Baltimore Orioles.
