Corner infielders have been the focus for MLB teams over the past week, with Nolan Arenado and Alex Bregman rumored to be among those who could play for a new team next year. Sportscaster Jared Carrabis hopes that the Boston Red Sox acquires either All-Star third basemen this offseason, even though it could displease Rafael Devers and Triston Casas.
Alex Bregman spent nine years with the Houston Astros before filing for free agency at the end of the season. After failing to re-sign him to a six-year, $156 million extension, the Astros initiated a trade deal for Arenado last week. But the St. Louis Cardinals superstar used his no-trade clause to block a move to the 2022 World Series champions.
Carrabis said on Section 10 for the Underdog Fantasy network on Sunday:
"I want Nolan Arenado or Alex Bregman," he said. "I want a third baseman, and that's going to annoy Rafael Devers, because he's going to come off third base. And if they put him at first, that's going to annoy Triston Casas cult members.
"I do like Triston Casas, but then there are just some people out there that really, really like him," he added. "They like Triston Casas more than they like the Boston Red Sox, which is weird."
The Astros have signed three-time Gold Glove-winning first baseman Christian Walker to a three-year, $60 million contract following Nolan Arenado rejecting a trade move.
Potential suitors for Nolan Arenado thinning out
St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado arrived in 2021, two years after signing an eight-year, $260 million contract extension with the Colorado Rockies. The Cardinals are now looking to offload the 10-time Gold Glove winner from their payroll, while the 33-year-old is also reportedly keen on signing for a championship contender as he approaches the twilight of his career.
However, the vacancies are coming down fast now, as the Houston Astros have signed Christian Walker, while the New York Yankees acquired Paul Goldschmidt on a one-year, $12 million deal. The Cleveland Guardians added Carlos Santana after trading first baseman Josh Naylor to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
So, there's a fair chance that Arenado could remain with the Cardinals. He has three years and $74 million remaining on his deal.
