Blake Snell did something he hadn't in his nine-year major league career on Friday. Snell hasn't pitched eight innings coming into the game against the Cincinnati Reds in his career. However, he etched his name in history books by registering the 18th no-hitter in San Francisco Giants history and the first since Chris Heston pitched one against the New York Mets on June 9, 2015.
While Snell dazzled the Reds hitters, his partner and mother of their son Kaedyn, Haeley, enjoyed a silent celebration watching from her home. Haeley was proud of her husband on the special occasion, sharing her feelings with her followers on Instagram.
"The most special moment, I'm so incredibly proud of you. Thank you God," she wrote in her story.
She also thanked Snell's former teammate Emilio Pagan's wife, Jordyn Pagan, for capturing the incredible moment while she silently enjoyed it at home.
"Also thank you to Jordyn for filming this for me while I whisper screamed at my TV from home, trying not to wake my baby," she wrote.
Snell welcomed his first son earlier this season, in June.
Blake Snell "pumped up" after throwing the first no-hitter of his career
Among all his accomplishments, which include two Cy Young awards each in the AL and NL, a no-hitter was the only thing left for Blake Snell to do. He achieved that feat when he took to the mound against the Reds on Friday. The left-handed ace only allowed three walks in his 11-strikeout no-hitter en route to a 3-0 victory for the Giants.
Snell struck out Santiago Espinal with a curveball, retired Jonathan India on weak contact and induced a lineout from Elly De La Cruz to finish his 114-pitch no-hitter.
“I was pumped up,” Snell said in a postgame reaction. “It was a great time. I’m still kind of shocked. I need to go home, let it sink in.
“They can’t say it anymore. Complete game, shutout, no-hitter. Leave me alone. 'He doesn't go into the 9th. He doesn't go into the 8th.' Just did it. Leave me alone.”
“That’s as nervous as I’ve been in a long time,” manager Bob Melvin said. “I wanted that for him so bad. If anybody has the stuff to throw a no-hitter, it’s Blake Snell. It finally came through. Pitched nine innings of no-hit ball. He’s got that feather in his cap, which is pretty cool.”
After starting the season on a bad note, Blake Snell swelled up his ERA to 9.51 in his first six starts. Many used this opportunity to mock the pitcher and his demands during free agency. However, since returning from the injured list on July 9, Snell has pitched at a Cy Young level, posting a 0.55 ERA with 41 strikeouts and 10 walks.
He has quashed all this uncertainty surrounding him. Now he's in a position to demand a new paycheck from the Giants or threaten to walk out after this season. He is on a two-year, $62 million contract with opt-outs in place.
