Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Mookie Betts is playing like his hair is on fire this season. Many were not expecting it and instead were expecting him to struggle a bit with his new position change to shortstop.
However, the seven-time All-Star has taken the position change in stride. After 37 games at shortstop, Betts has a fielding percentage of .960 and is raking at the plate.
Betts is hitting .388/.430/.536 with eight home runs, 31 runs batted in and nine stolen bases. His .388 average leads the entire league, and his manager Dave Roberts could not be more impressed.
"I'm at a loss for words. I don't think it's ever been done for this level of player. I could write a short story about how impressive it really is that he has taken this on like this," - said Roberts.
Oftentimes when a player makes a position change, it is not as drastic as moving from the outfield to second base to shortstop. It can take its toll on players, but not Betts.
"And to be as offensive as he has been, not making excuses, owning certain things that haven't been great. I mean, there's no perfect player, as I have taught my mentors, but if there's close to a perfect player, it's Mookie Betts" - said Roberts.
That's quite the compliment for a manager who has been around the game for a long time and has seen and coached some really talented players. That goes to show just how highly Roberts thinks about Betts.
Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts is a freak athlete
While being a star in Major League Baseball is hard enough, Dodgers' star Mookie Betts does not just stop there. He's a freak athlete and is seemingly good at any sport he decides to pick up.
Betts has been seen cutting crispy routes on the football field, can dunk and is an insane bowler. There is seemingly nothing this man cannot do.
It's likely because of this that he has had no problems making the switch over to shortstop this year. While small in size, his athleticism is off the charts.
If it were not for baseball, fans would have likely seen him pursue one of these other sports. Do not be surprised if you see Betts' name in the PBA when he hangs up his cleats.
