The New York Yankees need a shake-up after their dismal World Series loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers in October. While Juan Soto's free agency has been reportedly the main agenda for the Bronx Bombers this offseason, they need to fill in other positions as well.
The Yankees infield needs to be strengthened, especially after a glaring collapse in World Series Game 5 highlighted their shortcomings. The Bronx Bombers declined a $17 million club option for first baseman Anthony Rizzo, making him a free agent this offseason.
On Wednesday's episode of "The Michael Kay Show," a caller asked host Michael Kay, his co-hosts Don La Greca and Peter Rosenberg, if the Yankees should pursue Toronto Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
However, Kay shot down the idea, saying (0:50):
"I don't think they'd go for Guerrero. Guerrero had said, now he kind of walked it back a little, he'd never play for the Yankees because of something that he thinks they did to his dad. They were nagged on a contract. So, I'm not sure if he's the perfect player for the Yankees. I'm not I'm not quite sure.
"What I mean, what's his position? Is he a first baseman? I mean, he's better than he used to be still not a great first baseman. You're gonna put them back at third. You can't DH them. He's going to want a mega contract of like 10 to 11 years."
He continued by citing potential issues for captain Aaron Judge:
"I don't think they're going to swim in that water. If the Yankees are going to get a first baseman. It's going to be a guy like Christian Walker. Where you can sign into a two-year deal and then eventually move Aaron judge to first base. But if you sign somebody long term, like if you saw a Pete Alonso to a six-year deal, what are you doing with the Aaron Judge?"
Potential options for Yankees at first base other than Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
While a move for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. seems tempting from the outside, the Yankees could go for relatively feasible options in Christian Walker or the Tampa Bay Rays' Tampa Bay Rays for Yandy Diaz.
MLB analyst and former Cincinnati GM Jim Bowden also made a case for the Rays to trade their first baseman to the Yankees in his column for The Athletic.
“In return, the Rays might be able to land two prospects such as speedy center fielder Brando Mayea and righty Zach Messinger, who could develop into a back-of-the-rotation starter,” Bowden wrote.
The Yankees are considered one of the frontrunners in the race for Juan Soto and it seems like the Dominican slugger's sweepstakes could have a say on the team's pursuit to fill other positions.
