The 2024 MLB season has not been great for Bo Bichette as the Blue Jays turned out to be a disaster in the AL East. The franchise has struggled as they remain at the bottom of the division.
Bichette's performance has dipped as the shortstop has not been able to back his All-Star campaign in 2023. The Blue Jays have a lot of work to do in terms of building their roster.
That said, it's rather doubtful that Bichette might remain with the team. Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will become free agents next year, and several teams are believed to be interested in the duo at the 2024 MLB trade deadline.
In an interview with the Foul Territory podcast, MLB analyst Ken Rosenthal talked about the potential market for shortstops and the Blue Jays' possible trade options. According to Rosenthal, Bo Bichette needs to get out of Toronto.
"Bo Bichette is an interesting guy. There's no doubt about it. In my view, he needs to get out of there. I don't know that he is happy there. I haven't talked to him about this and I haven't necessarily heard specifically, but it certainly seems like he gives every indication of being a change of scenery type," Rosenthal said.
Rosenthal further believes that the Blue Jays will not go overboard with their options other than their potential free agents.
"Based on what we've seen from Toronto in the past, do not believe that they are going to go anything beyond their potential free agents," Rosenthal continued.
The All-Star shortstop is under team control for one more season but it's unlikely that the Blue Jays might be able to retain their shortstop. He signed a three-year, $33.6 million deal with the team last year.
Bo Bichette's 2024 slump continues with the Blue Jays
After 297 appearances at the plate, Bo Bichette has just four home runs. The slugger's struggles do not seem to be improving. Bichette has a batting clip of .226 with a .280 OBP and a .607 OPS. Bichette has contributed 30 RBIs and drove in only 29 runs for his team.
However, Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins refuted trade rumors last month, saying:
"It just doesn't make any sense for us."
The Blue Jays might trade Bichette if they get the right deal. Given his slumping performance, it's all the more reason for the team to get a replacement.
