Anthony Volpe has earned quite the name in pinstripes ever since his debut last year. The New York Yankees were happy to upgrade Volpe to the shortstop position. While he did have a tough time toward the end of the 2023 MLB season, the Yanks seemed fine with it as he continued in 2024.
Volpe's 2024 performance started well, but weeks after the All-Star break, he dipped, slugging only .249/ .300/ .686. With 11 home runs and 47 RBIs, the numbers look pretty low for Volpe, especially in 518 appearances at the plate.
Despite his struggles, Yankees GM Brian Cashman defended Anthony Volpe. In a post shared by Jomboy on social media, Cashman took the side of his player. However, Yankees fans were upset about the fact that the management supported an underperforming player.
In his post, Jomboy wrote that the Yankees need to start being honest with themselves.
Here's a look at some of the fan reactions from X.
"An insane combination of arrogance and culture without accountability. Bloodbath to clear house and reset is desperately overdue," wrote one fan.
"The Yankees FO must have the word “Impossible” written like Ted Lasso above their offices. They think it means overcoming and winning a World Series. What it actually means is the FO banging their heads against the wall, doing the same thing repeatedly expecting different results," another fan chipped in.
"The Yankees belief and trust in Volpe immediately put undue pressure on Volpe since his debut. The way they handle him by just giving him the job and just trotting him out there every single day is odd," one fan responded.
Comments continued to flow as fans criticized the management.
"The worst GM in the league, prove me wrong," one fan chimed in.
"Hal doesn’t care about winning," wrote one fan.
"Man it’s getting terrible the way they are managing the team. They just have too much faith in guys. Sometimes you just got to cut your loses," wrote another fan.
Aaron Boone defends Anthony Volpe
Aaron Boone is known for supporting his players and it's no surprise that the Yankees manager did the same for Anthony Volpe. In an interview with Talkin' Yanks, Boone got heated when asked about Volpe's slugging performance.
"He's the best shortstop in the league. Like, that's enormous at that position. He's hitting like a league-average or below league-average. Add it all up, he is a winning player," Boone said.
Anthony Volpe is a key player for Yanks and despite his struggles, the club is keen on keeping him on the team. However, fans beg to differ as they believe that management should discuss his current struggles.
