Jesse Winker and the New York Mets opened the NLCS series at Dodger Stadium on Sunday. The Dodgers had a great start to Game 1, while the Mets struggled to score and trailed by six runs.
The Mets had only a few opportunities to get on base, and the closest to scoring was when Jesse Winker reached second base. Jose Iglesias was up against Jack Flaherty at the top of the fifth inning when he hit one deep to the left-center field.
Kike Hernandez was unable to reach the ball in time to make a play, but he quickly threw it to second base. Winker, who had an advantage in reaching third base, seemed confused on the base path as he hustled in between second. The Dodgers made a tag before Winker attempted to reach third.
Mets fans were frustrated after his failed attempt and took to social media to express the same.
Here's a look at some of the fan reactions on X.
"Is he gonna stare down the CF now?" asked one fan, referring to Winker's previous staredown moments.
"It's hilarious how bad he's always been on the base paths," wrote another fan.
"Isn't this why we have 3rd base coaches? trust them. if they screw up, then yell at them. it annoys me when runners keep their eye on the ball and thinking too much. when you think, you often hurt the team," one fan responded.
Comments continued to flow as several fans called out Winker for his performance.
"I see better base running in my mens league," one fan chipped in.
"Why in the world did he hesitate to go to third when the ball was thrown to second?" asked one fan.
"It’s so obvious the Mets got payed off to throw the series," one fan chimed in.
Jesse Winker and the Mets suffer miserable loss against the Dodgers
Jesse Winker was the only player from the Mets who got closest to reaching home. The Dodgers handed over the Mets a miserable defeat as their offense was a no-show.
Jack Flaherty's seven scoreless innings and a strong bullpen performance restricted the Mets from scoring. Winker and his team suffered a miserable 9-0 loss as they now hold a disadvantage in the NLCS.
