Back during the MLB 2016 season, Kyle Schwarber was an integral part of the Chicago Cubs' success. They went on to win the World Series for the first time since the 1908 season, breaking the longstanding 'Curse of the Billy Goat'.
Being the team's first World Series title in over 100 years, it was the talk of the offseason. The club was invited to the White House following their title which has become a tradition in American sports.
However, this trip to the White House was a bit more special than others. On the Rich Eisen show, Schwarber recalled it being President Barack Obama's last day in the White House.
"It was awesome. It was his last day in office, or at the White House, not in the office, and I'll tell you what, I don't care about political views. When you get to meet him face-to-face, he's a really good personal dude" Schwarber said.
Even though Obama was a fan of the other team in Chicago, the two still got along great. Schwarber explained the man in office as somebody who took an interest in others.
"It was cool to hear [Michelle Obama's] stories of her watching games with her father. That was her memory of her father," Schwarber said.
Schwarber was also a fan of Michelle Obama and the time he spent with her. The two were serious sports fans before Obama got into office and that remains today.
Kyle Schwarber recalls a "short tour" of the White House
Being Obama's last day in the White House, things were a bit off schedule. There were plenty of things to get done and a tour for Kyle Schwarber and the rest of the Cubs team was not the biggest concern.
Schwarber recalled the tour being rather short. On top of that, since Obama was getting ready to fly out, after the tour, it was hard for a lot of the team to catch their flights home.
"A lot of guys were leaving after that, and we're all trying to catch flights and the President is leaving. So, they shut the place down and we're packed in like sardines in the hallway" Schwarber said.
Fortunately, everybody was able to get out of there, but not at the time they had hoped. However, that is what happens when a championship team visits the White House during a president's final few days.
