Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Jack Flaherty was traded to the LA Dodgers on Tuesday before the MLB trade deadline concluded. Per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the NY Yankees were in on trading for Flaherty till the last minute as general manager Brian Cashman held great interest in the RHP.
During their latest radio show episode on "Boomer and Gio," discussing the Flaherty deadline trade deal, radio host Gregg Giannotti (Gio) backed Brian Cashman on sidestepping from the deadline trade deal, as he said:
"It reminds me of [2022] when they traded for a man named Frankie Montas. It didn’t work out when they traded for damaged goods. There’s no way you can tell me that doesn’t affect a general manager."
The Yankees failed to sign Jack Flaherty before the 6 PM EST trade deadline on Tuesday. The Bronx Bombers ultimately signed a utility man from the Marlins, but while talking to reporters about the Flaherty deal, Brian Cashman reiterated that he was in it till the end, as he said:
"At the end of the day, I would've brought Jack Flaherty in if I could've matched up, and I had difficulty matching up. And that was the reason I don't have him."
A major part of the Yankees' hesitancy to match the asking price by the Tigers was the persistent back issue that has been troubling Jack Flaherty since July. Because of the lower back issue, Flaherty had to take two injections in three weeks to calm his nerves. Jack is 7-5 for the season with a 2.95 ERA, 133 strikeouts, and a 0.96 OPS.
Dodgers and Yankees pursued Jack Flaherty to add depth to their bullpen
The LA Dodgers are eyeing a deep postseason run in the current campaign and have thus pursued Flaherty to add much-needed depth to their starting rotation. With doubts surrounding Yoshinobu Yamamoto's return and Tyler Glasnow still attempting to get back into the rhythm after his brief stint on the IL, the addition of Flaherty was a welcome sight.
The NY Yankees attempted to add Jack Flaherty to an underperforming rotation that has been struggling since June 1 with an ERA of 5.71. Moreover, Gerrit Cole is far from getting back to his Cy Young self, and Clarke Schmidt is still recovering from his injury.
