Pete Alonso met his wife, Haley while he was playing in the Cape Cod League back in 2015. The two quickly hit it off, but, Alonso was enrolled at the University of Florida and Haley was enrolled at Michigan State.
To make the relationship work, it had to be long-distance. This was something the couple were willing to try, but it came with some hard kickback from Alonso's roommates.
Alonso's roommates would constantly badger him about the relationship. It eventually got to him, and he could not take it anymore, via ESPN's Buster Olney.
"It got bad to where they were totally tearing into me about it. And then I was really upset," said Alonso.
People also sent illicit photos to his social media. After that, Alonso confronted the person who did it, grabbing him by the shirt and pulling him off his scooter.
"Look, you need to stop. Don't ever do that," said Alonso.
Despite the sabotage attempts, Alonso and Haley were able to make it work. They got married in 2021 and the couple is still going strong.
Pete Alonso's former coach speaks highly of the slugger
Pete Alonso is a hard worker. He could not control whether or not he was the best athlete on the field, but he could control how hard he worked.
This was something that the University of Florida coach Kevin O'Sullivan admired. For somebody who coached a ton of MLB talent over the years, he was in awe over how Alonso kept his head down.
"[Alonso] was arguably our hardest worker and I always respected that. I really enjoyed coaching Pete," said O'Sullivan.
Alonso spent three seasons at the University of Florida. During that time, he hit .316/.407/.517 with 23 home runs and 124 runs batted in. In his freshman year, Alonso was named All-Southeastern Conference. During his last two seasons, he helped Florida reach the College World Series.
Alonso also spent his college summers playing in the Northwoods and then the Cape Cod League. Just earlier this year, he was inducted into the Northwoods League Hall of Fame.
His college accomplishments would lead to his first-round draft pick in 2016 with the New York Mets. Now, the slugger is looking to get a massive payday as he sits on the open market as a free agent.
