Ever since the end of the World Series, Juan Soto's name has dominated MLB-related discourse. Long thought to be bound for some of the league's most monied clubs, it now looks like one contender is pulling ahead.
In a lengthy commentary posted on X, baseball journalist Mike Rodriguez laid out the case for a deal between Juan Soto and the New York Mets. In his post, Rodriguez outlined the unqiue ecosystem in Queens, and why Soto would be an ideal fit.
Legacy was the chief argument Rodriguez used to build his case. Contrary to the New York Yankees - where Soto played in 2024 - Rodriguez argued that the Mets lack the same multitude of franchise legends. As such, Soto has the chance to establish himself as a modern Mets legend.
On a more practical note, Rodriguez claimed that the infrastructure exists in the New York Mets' front office to ensure that Soto succeeds. The analyst cited billionaire owner Steve Cohen, who is known for his willingness to spend freely. Cohen, Rodriguez arged, would spare no expense in constructing a winning environment around Soto should a deal be hammered out.
With a total payroll of $317 million in 2024, the Mets ranked first in MLB in the category. Since Steve Cohen took control in 2020, the team has dished out some record-shattering contracts, including deals with annual average values of $43 million to pitchers Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander.
"Today is a great day for Juan Soto to sign with the New York Mets" - BINK
The winner of the 2019 World Series as a member of the Washington Nationals, Soto has accomplished a tremendous amount despite only being 25 years old. A A five-time Silver Slugger and former batting champ, Soto's 41 homers in 2024 represented a career high.
Mets owner Steve Cohen appears interested in Juan Soto
At a recent event, Cohen was questioned about the prospect of inking Soto. In an attempt to be forthcoming with Mets fans, the 68 year-old former hedge fund manager said:
"We'll figure it out, it's yes or no. There's no middle ground, and time will tell."
Cohen is right, time will tell. However, whichever team eventually lands the prize of Soto will need to act fast, and play smart. If Rodriguez' predictions come to fruition, then Cohen could be on the brink of the biggest deal in his club's history.
