The New York Yankees are in the middle of a solid offseason so far. They have added players to fill various holes after a lackluster 2023 season where they missed the postseason.
The Bronx Bombers traded for All-Star outfielder Juan Soto, Trent Grisham, and Alex Verdugo. They recently signed right-handed pitcher Marcus Stroman to a two-year, $37 million deal. He should pair nicely alongside Gerrit Cole at the top of the rotation.
However, MLB insider Jon Heyman is not impressed by the team's rotation heading into the new season.
"Their rotation does not look very sound right now" stated Heyman.
Heyman believes the only pitcher the coaching staff does not have to worry about is Gerrit Cole. Last season was a mess for Carlos Rodon, who was plagued with injuries; the same could be said for much of the rotation.
"It looks like Gerrit Cole and then you're crossing your fingers" said Heyman.
Heyman would like to see the team secure another solid starting pitcher heading into the new season. He believes that would put the team in a position to fight for a division title.
Taking a look at the Yankees' projected rotation for the 2024 season
There is no question that Gerrit Cole will serve as the Yankees' ace heading into the new season. He is coming off a spectacular season where he won his first Cy Young Award.
Cole started 33 games this past season, compiling a 15-4 record with an AL-leading 2.63 ERA. He will look to build on that magnificent season with his new-look team.
Stroman will likely serve as the team's No. 2. He is coming off a season where he missed some time due to a hip injury and rib cartilage ailment. Despite that, he still posted a 10-9 record with a 3.95 ERA across 136.2 innings of work.
Carlos Rodon could slot in after Stroman. All eyes will be on Rodon for the 2024 season, as he is coming off a less-than-impressive season last year. It took him a while to debut, and when he did, he could not get the ball rolling.
Nestor Cortes Jr. and Clarke Schmidt will likely round out the rotation for now. They also have Clayton Beetter and Luis Gil, who could make appearances.
It will be interesting to see if the Yankees will roll with this or if they will listen to Heyman and grab another starter.
