One of the most coveted names in free agency has yet to pitch in the Majors, Roki Sasaki. The young Japanese pitcher has all the makings of being a superstar in MLB thanks to his arsenal of pitches and electric fastball. The 23-year-old is arguably the best player outside of North America and is expected to have teams lining up for his signature.

Unlike last offseason's Japanese stars Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Shota Imanaga, Roki Sasaki is unable to sign a massive free-agent contract. Instead, thanks to him being both under 25 years old and having less than six years of professional experience, Sasaki will be subject to international signing pool money restrictions, making him a target for nearly every team in the league.

One of those teams will be the New York Yankees. The Bronx Bombers are coming off a crushing World Series defeat against the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, adding a player of Sasaki's caliber could help them return to the dance sooner rather than later.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman is aware of the talent Sasaki possesses and has made his interest in the Japanese phenomenon known.

During Wednesday's press conference after introducing pitcher Max Fried as a Yankee, Cashman said this about Sasaki,

"He has a chance to be one of the world’s great pitchers. It would be nice to have Yankee Stadium be his home," Brian Cashman said of the 23-year-old.

It will be interesting to see how Roki Sasaki's free agency will play out. After being posted by the Chiba Lotte Marines of Nippon Professional Baseball, Sasaki has until January 23, to decide on an MLB club before his signing period closes.

The New York Yankees are set to have an in-person meeting with Roki Sasaki

It appears that the New York Yankees are one step closer to a potential deal as MLB insider Bryan Hoch has reported that Brian Cashman and the team will have an in-person meeting with Sasaki. Since teams cannot throw mega-contracts at Sasaki, they will need to present the young pitcher with the team's plans for both the club and player. This was the same as when Shohei Ohtani joined the Angels in 2017.

The New York Yankees will not be the only team involved in the process as clubs like the Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox have also been linked to a potential deal. No matter where he lands, he has all the tools to be an immediate impact player for his first MLB club.
