David Ortiz is remembered primarily for his career with the Boston Red Sox. Ortiz's records are still noteworthy, and the Red Sox will never forget his contribution. The former slugger created history with the team and still supports them today.
Ortiz won three World Series Championships and seven Silver Slugger Awards during his stint in Boston. For 14 seasons, Ortiz had a career to remember with the Red Sox. Now, it's time for his legacy to continue, as the Red Sox picked Ortiz's son D' Angelo Ortiz in the 2024 MLB Draft on July 16.
"Big Pappi" always believed he would see his son in a Red Sox Jersey one day. While he discussed this in the past, it finally bore fruit today. The Red Sox picked D'Angelo Ortiz 567th overall in the 19th round of the draft.
It is an unforgettable moment for Ortiz to see his dream come true. The Hall of Famer opened up on the special moment in Texas while attending the All-Star game alongside Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez.
"That was unbelievable. It’s a great feeling when you see your kids moving forward in their life... A lot of emotion goes through you. Big boy, let's do it. Let's keep up the good work, daddy loves you," Ortiz said.
Red Sox scouting manager says being David Ortiz's son was a plus for D'Angelo
The Red Sox's amateur scouting manager Devin Pearson said that being David Ortiz's son was a plus for D'Angelo. However, he was drafted as a prospect.
"I just want to make it clear that D’Angelo is a prospect, and the reason we selected him is a result of the relationship that our area scout has had with the player for a long time. And we had him at a workout recently and got to interact with him, just felt like it was a good add to the organization. And it’s a plus that his dad’s David Ortiz, but we drafted him as a prospect," Pearson said.
D'Angelo is already becoming a versatile player. The prospect has been playing at third base and in the outfield. D'Angelo is at Miami Dade College in his sophomore year. Being a part of the Red Sox is indeed an honor for D'Angelo.
