Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo was tasked with managing the National League squad, headlined by rookie sensation Paul Skenes. He gave the start to the flamethrowing righty who got the job done.
Skenes went on to have a hitless inning, but it did not come without some drama. he was able to get Steven Kwan to fly out and Gunnar Henderson to ground out, but walked Juan Soto, bringing up Aaron Judge. However, he got Judge to roll over on one to third base for the out.
It is impressive for somebody as fresh and as young as Skenes to have the confidence to go out there and face MLB All-Stars. That confidence is something that stood out to Lovullo afterward, as he told Dan Patrick on the Dan Patrick Show.
"Just very humble, very proud of his craft, and he wants to go out there and be great. It's hard to believe, it really is hard to believe that he's 22 years old," Torey Lovullo said.
Torey Lovullo, like many other baseball fans this season has been left speechless by what Paul Skenes has shown early on. He also had the mental to keep himself at the top of his game, which is often hard to come by.
"Probably Doc Gooden. You remember when Doc was as dominant as he was early in his career? And he had a great career, don't get me wrong. It was a long, great career. When he jumped on the scene it was power stuff with a wipeout curveball," Lovullo said.
Lovullo was then asked to give a comparison to Skenes, and it did not take him long to think of a name. Many young pitchers would love to be compared to somebody as good as former Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden.
Torey Lovullo believes Paul Skenes can keep up the velocity for much of his career
Dan Patrick had to ask Torey Lovullo if he believes Paul Skenes could keep up his impressive velocity for much of his career. Unless something unforeseen happens, Lovullo does not see Skenes losing any velocity, especially given how big the youngster is:
"Well, he's a big horse. When you are stadning next to him, he's almost seven foot. So, he's got some force on the baseball, no doubt about it."
Time will tell if Skenes losing any bit of his touch, but that is not something many MLB insiders see happening.
