Veteran Red Sox pitcher Liam Hendriks is yet to pitch in the MLB this season, but that has not stopped him from making off-field contributions. The three-time All-Star was nominated for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award for a sixth time, owing to his contribution to the community.
The league announced the 30 nominees for the award on Monday. When asked about his sixth nomination and how he keeps himself motivated for his charity work, Hendriks said:
“It’s not that hard, just don’t be a d**k.”
Hendriks signed for the Boston Red Sox in February, but injuries have restricted him to just six minor league games in rehab. However, Hendriks is pleased to give back to the community during his recovery.
“It’s been a really welcome sight for me, especially with not being able to play as much as I want to this year,” Hendriks said. “So it’s going about and being able to have an impact away from the team but still with the organization has been a big boon for me.”
Liam Hendriks has played for several teams during his 13-year-long career, and while he has swapped jerseys, his philanthropic spirit remains intact.
Liam Hendriks is using his journey to help fellow cancer survivors
Liam Hendriks was diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2022. The then-White Sox player returned to baseball after recovering in 2023. However, when he was signing for the Red Sox in 2024, Hendriks had a special request from the team.
The three-time All-Star constantly wanted to set up meetings with people suffering from cancer and cancer survivors in an attempt to motivate and guide them through their recovery.
“So being able to talk to people who are going through it, have gone through it or are about to go through it has been beneficial to me," Hendriks said. "But I also know that the more you talk about it the better it is. So hopefully I can change a couple people’s perspectives on the way of what they’re going through or what they’re about to.”
The two-time AL Reliever of the Year started his rehab in August and is hoping to get some major league action by the end of the season.
