The LA Dodgers have begun a quest to boost their roster as they maneuver through an injury-riddled season. VP and general manager Brandon Gomes opened up about the team’s strategic approach with the trade deadline fast approaching.
When asked on "MLB Network Radio" about the areas the team is looking to improve before the deadline, Gomes said:
“It’s being opportunistic in figuring out how to add impact talent with all the guys that are around the injured list currently. You know, you feel like our team is in a very good place, so it’s really about supplementing that group and figuring out what the market is and how that plays into how we can add some real talent at the deadline."
Areas where the Dodgers need to add at the trade
One pressing need for the team is infield help, particularly at shortstop. While getting another third baseman may seem logical, exploring options for a shortstop could provide more flexibility to the LA Dodgers. The team had Mookie Betts at shortstop, but he is currently injured. If the depth can hold until he returns, either with the help of Miguel Rojas or another infielder, Betts could move back to his customary position in right field.
This would help with the outfield situation. However, if that is not doable, the team should look for an outfielder, as most others apart from Teoscar Hernandez haven’t been great this year. On July 29th, The Athletic reported that the team had discussions with the St. Louis Cardinals about shortstop Tommy Edman, who also plays centerfield.
Pitching is another area where every contending team looks to improve, and the Boys in Blue are no different. As there are uncertainties around Walker Buehler and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who is on the 60-day IL with right triceps tightness. A possible target could be Chicago White Sox left-hander Garrett Crochet. If not Crochet, Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal is another prominent name in trade rumors.
