The Roki Sasaki sweepstakes are continuing to heat up as the deadline to sign with an MLB club rapidly approaches. The 23-year-old Japanese pitching sensation has been one of the most coveted names on the market all offseason and now it appears that a decision about his future will be made sooner rather than later.
Over the past few weeks, the list of potential landing spots for Sasaki has continued to shrink as the pitcher and his representation have eliminated teams from contention. Over the last week, the New York Mets, New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers have all been removed from the list of potential destinations. Well, you can now add the San Diego Padres to that list, as per the latest update from MLB insider Francys Romero on Friday.
The news that the Friars were no longer in the running sent social media into a frenzy, with dozens of fans believing that the Padres' elimination solidified Sasaki's move to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
"This scares me into believing it’s Dodgers. Baseball is really starting to piss me off" - One fan shared online.
"Nobody has it easier than Dodgers fans!" - Another fan posted.
"It was always the Dodgers....this is a dog and pony show for Roki. Dodgers WS Champs 2025 confirmed" - One more added.
It now appears that the decision of where Roki Sasaki will play in 2025 will come down to the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays. The fact that the Dodgers are coming off a World Series title and have seemingly been able to land any player they want has left fans believing that the Dodgers will add another Japanese ace to their ranks.
"It's over Dodgers will threepeat" - One fan posted.
Some hope the Blue Jays land Sasaki.
"Disgusting. Please let him shock the world and go to the Blue Jays" - Another fan shared.
"Praying for the Jays!" - One more added.
Toronto Blue Jays add additional funds to help their pursuit of Roki Sasaki
With Roki Sasaki's sweepstakes reportedly coming down to the Dodgers and the Blue Jays, the latter made a significant move in order to help their odds of signing the phenom. The Jays swung a deal with the Cleveland Guardians for veteran outfielder Myles Straw and additional international bonus pool money.
According to insiders Ben Nicholson-Smith and Shi Davidi, the Blue Jays gained an additional $2 million in international bonus pool money that they can use to sign Sasaki. While the Dodgers have long been the favorite to land the young pitcher, an extra $2 million could shift the balance in the Jays' favor.
