It's beginning to look like it's the New York Mets or bust for Pete Alonso. What was once a promising market for first basemen has all but dried up, leaving the Mets the last likely landing spot for the four-time All-Star.
MLB analyst Eduardo Perez believes this deal is all but done and that Alonso will be back in New York:
"It's the mutual desire of both Alonso and the Mets. They've expressed it. I think it's a priority for both the Alonso team and the Mets."
Perez also noted that ownership, namely Steve Cohen, is far from concerned about spending money. The market fit is perfect in Perez's eyes, too. He went on:
"The team needs him. ... Pete Alonso is a Met. ... He's going to break a lot of records. If you give him the opt-outs, I think he's going to opt in."
The MLB Network host said he believes that Alonso will be a Met for "at least the next six years" regardless of how the two sides go about cementing that fact.
Perez also acknowledged that there are alternatives. He added that Alex Bregman could move to first base or push Mark Vientos over there and provide a better lineup boost behind Juan Soto, but he reiterated that the best option is still Alonso.
Mets ace predicts return for Pete Alonso
Sean Manaea was a free agent after his tenure with the Mets this offseason. He re-signed on a $75 million contract. It's a similar situation for Pete Alonso, and Manaea believes it will have a similar resolution.
Via Sporting News, he said:
“We’ve done an incredible job this offseason: We got Juan and some other things. Hopefully, a couple other things happen. I’m always gonna support [Alonso] and I’d definitely love to have him back on the Mets and be our first baseman. Hopefully, we can get that done, but whatever happens, I’ll be happy for him.”
The two sides have reached a standstill in negotiations, but they're still interested in one another and all signs do point to the return Manaea believes is coming.
