There is no denying that Shohei Ohtani is one of the most famous baseball players on the planet. The two-way superstar has seen his celebrity status take yet another leap this year after signing a 10-year, $700,000,000 mega deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers this offseason.
The moment that it was officially announced that Ohtani was going to be joining the Los Angeles Dodgers, he became not only one of the most discussed baseball players but one of the most talked about athletes in the world. The two-time MVP has not only found himself as one of the most discussed players in the league but also one of the most popular among fans.
The MLB announced that the Dodgers superstar leads the entire league in total jerseys sold. Ohtani not only leads the entire major league in jersey sales this year but has also become the first Japanese-born player in history to lead the list:
"Incredible! Stay grinding Shohei Ohtani," one fan shared.
"He's kind of a big deal!" another fan posted.
"If I ever considered buying a jersey of a player who’s not on my team it would be Shohei," another fan chimed in.
Following the announcement that Shohei Ohtani leads the league in sales, a number of fans took to social media to share their opinions on the news. It was unsurprising that the global superstar leads the league in sales given his reach across the world.
Many fans were completely unsurprised that the Dodgers star is the league's top seller:
"It’s really not a surprise Ohtani is #1!!" one fan said.
"International Superstar!" another fan shared.
"Why u acting like this is a surprise or news," one fan asked.
Shohei Ohtani tops star-studded jersey sales list
Following Ohtani on the list is Bryce Harper of the Philadelphia Phillies (second), Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees (third) and Shohei's teammate Mookie Betts (fourth). Unsurprisingly, the top 10 players in terms of jersey sales come from the biggest markets, including Francisco Lindor of the New York Mets (seventh) and Jose Altuve of the Houston Astros (10th).
Many of the top jersey sales come with some of the most established stars in the MLB, however, a few young superstars have cracked the top 20. Elly De La Cruz of the Cincinnati Reds (15th) and Adley Rutschman of the Baltimore Orioles (16th). Notably, American League MVP hopeful Gunnar Henderson did not find himself inside the top 20 players.
