Late into the 2012 season, New York Yankees slugger Derek Jeter stepped into the box against Corey Kluber and the then-Cleveland Indians. Kluber was an exciting rookie and it would not be an easy at-bat.
However, a 92 MPH fastball got away from Kluber, nailing Jeter in the helmet. It was a scary incident, but it never knocked Jeter to his feet and he eventually shook it off.
Jeter stayed in the game, refusing to be helped off the field by his manager Joe Girardi, and the team's trainers. While it did not appear to affect him, it did mentally, via ESPN's Wallace Matthews.
"It's scary when it's coming. It is what it is," said Jeter.
Jeter shared some words with Kluber while he gathered his helmet and walked to first base. He was unhappy and it was a painful walk to secure his free base.
"Of course it hurt. You get hit with a 90-something MPH fastball, it's going to hurt. There's no problem, so I'm fine," said Jeter.
Jeter nearly snapped when a reporter asked him if getting thumped by a 92 MPH fastball hurt. Even with a helmet, there is no way to take that impact lightly.
Derek Jeter was frustrated at the young Cleveland pitcher
During that time, Corey Kluber was making his fifth big-league start. He did not have much experience and was still trying to learn the type of pitcher he was going to be in the MLB.
Derek Jeter understood that, but he was still frustrated by the incident. He wanted the youngster to be more careful when pitching high and inside moving forward.
"I haven't faced the guy and I don't know the guy. I don't think he [hit Jeter on purpose], but if you're throwing up and in, you've got to be careful. That's a dangerous area to be throwing" said Jeter.
Despite getting his head rattled, Jeter and the Yankees locked in for the rest of the ballgame. With the game tied at 1 apiece during the sixth, Jeter led off the inning with a single. This set up Nick Swisher to hit the go-ahead two-run home run.
Cleveland could not get anything going to close out the game as CC Sabathia, David Peterson and Rafael Soriano were dealing. The Yanks won the game 3-1 which helped ease Jeter's pain.
