In July, pitcher Jack Flaherty was unsure if his then-team, the Tigers, would even make the postseason. By the end of October, Flaherty was hoisting the World Series trophy as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
A native of the LA suburb of Burbank, Flaherty was drafted out of Harvard-West Lake High School in Los Angeles. At the time, the right-hander likely never expected he would bring a World Series to southern California.
On a recent appearance on the Rich Eisen Show, Jack Flaherty addressed how special it was to win the World Series at home. According to the 29 year-old:
"It's something everybody never talks about"
When Flaherty was traded from the Detroit Tigers to the Dodgers on July 30, he was already having one of the best seasons of his career. A Cy Young finalist in 2019, Flaherty was 7-5 with a 2.95 ERA when he made the move to LA.
After the move to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Flaherty kept up the strong performances. In ten starts after July 30, Flaherty went 6-2, pitching to a 3.58 ERA, and amassing 61 strikeouts across 55.1 innings of work.
As the postseason drew nearer, injuries to top LA starters like Clayton Kershaw and Tyler Glasnow put even more pressure on Flaherty's shoulders. Along with Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Walker Buehler, the 2014 first rounder was to headline his club's cut-down rotation.
"Jack Flaherty wanted to join in on the fun with Ohtani and Yamamoto #Dodgers #WorldSeries champs" - Michael J Duarte
Unfortunately for Jack Flaherty, his showing in the 2024 postseason was far from remarkable. In 22 innings pitched, Flaherty was saddled with a 1-2 record and 7.36 ERA. In the World Series against the New York Yankees, Flaherty was charged with six earned runs in 6.2 innings. Moreover, Flaherty's showings against the Mets and Padres in the first two series' yielded similarily lacklustre results.
Jack Flaherty marvels at hometown crowd during World Series parade
Well aware of how much fans in LA love their Dodgers, Flaherty was still blown away by the million people who came out for the team's parade. As he told MLB.com:
"It's incredible to see people lining up, on the buildings and everything. Rep the cause!"
Undoubtedly a home town kid who made a big impact, expect GM Brandon Gomes to seriously consider keeping Jack Flaherty aound after his one-year, $14 million deal expires.
