The New York Yankees made another splash this offseason by acquiring Cody Bellinger from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for reliever Cody Poteet. After missing out on re-signing Juan Soto in unrestricted free agency, the Yankees front office has had to pivot to fill some open spots in their lineup.
Enter Bellinger, who has proven his ability to play all over the field on defense. The 2019 National League MVP with the Los Angeles Dodgers has had a rollercoaster career since winning the prestigious accolade. However, his defensive versatility has continually made him an intriguing asset.
This flexibility is something that Yankees manager Aaron Boone spoke about after acquiring Bellinger on Tuesday. The Bronx Bombers have a number of different positions that remain question marks heading into 2025, however, by landing the two-time All-Star, it can help Boone with his lineups on a day-to-day basis.
"I had a good conversation with him last night," Boone said. "He's very excited, and one of the first things he told me without me even broaching the subject was, 'By the way, I don't care where I play. Wherever you need me on a given night, center, left, first, whatever it is. I'm happy I'm in the lineup.'"
The former NL MVP has made a living by using his defensive abilities to help every team he has suited up for. This is something that Boone raved about after the trade, saying that the former Chicago Cubs star has proven himself as an asset all over the field.
"I think it's also a testament to the kind of player he is," Boone added. "He has a lot of confidence, and he has shown that in his career, the ability to go play at a really high level at a lot of different positions."
Cody Bellinger will reportedly take over as the New York Yankees center fielder in 2025
Even though Cody Bellinger has shown that he can play first base and all over the outfield, it appears that he may have his spot with the New York Yankees already determined.
Although some believed Bellinger could be taking over as the team's new first baseman, it does not appear to be the case. According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale, Bellinger will be manning center field for the Bronx Bombers. This decision means the team will also be moving Aaron Judge back to right field, a spot that Juan Soto vacated.
With Bellinger reportedly set to play in center field, the Yankees still need to figure out their situation at first base. The club has been linked to a number of first basemen, including Pete Alonso and Christian Walker. It looks like the Yankees are far from finished this offseason.
