The Texas Rangers have once again acquired "Alex Rodriguez," but no, the former MLB star isn't returning from retirement. Instead, the Rangers have just signed someone who also has the name "Alex Rodriguez," according to Francys Romero. This A-Rod is just 16 years old and is a Cuban defector.
Fans were drawn to this post, assuming the original A-Rod has signed. While an A-Rod did sign, it wasn't the one they thought. Nonetheless, it made up for tons of reactions under the post.
"It’s truly amazing what those roids will do," one fan commented, presumably making a joke about the 49-year-old A-Rod returning to play.
"can he play third base," one fan alluded to the fact that former MVP A-Rod moved to third base during his time with the Yankees to accommodate Derek Jeter.
"WELCOME BACK A-ROD!" another wrote.
Meanwhile, a couple of fans, given the history, assumed that even the new Alex Rodriguez would part ways with the Rangers as his namesake did during the early 2000s.
"He'll be a Yankee in no time," the fan said.
"Don’t worry, he’ll be traded to the Yankees once he reaches MVP caliber," another mentioned.
"In three years he'll be traded to the Yankees," one fan posted.
Most reactions are about what transpired in the early 2000s. Ahead of the 2001 season, the Rangers signed the older Rodriguez to a then-record 10-year deal worth $252 million. However, the Rangers surprisingly traded away A-Rod to the Yankees, in 2004, one season after he was named the AL MVP.
Alex Rodriguez is a Cuban defector, who once represented the country
The younger Alex Rodriguez, whose deal included a $400K bonus, left Cuba in 2020. He was named a member of the U-12 national team for the 2019 World Cup. Francys Romero shared the details with fans.
The signing took place on Wednesday, Day 1 of the international signing period. The Rangers have added 22 players on Day 1 including outfielder Elorky Rodriguez from the Dominican Republic for $1.1 million salary.
