One of the biggest revelations of the season for the Los Angeles Dodgers was Tommy Edman. After spending the first five years of his MLB career with the St. Louis Cardinals, Edman was dealt to the Dodgers during the 2024 trade deadline in a three-team trade that involved Michael Kopeh, Tommy Pham and Erick Fedde.
Mainly utilized as a middle infielder, Edman was converted by Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts to play the outfield, as the Dodgers lacked depth in the role. In an interview with the MLB Network during the Winter Meetings in Dallas, Roberts talked about how Edman played a crucial role in the team's success.
"It starts with Tommy Edman," Roberts said.
Roberts shared to the panel that the NLCS MVP made life easier for the squad and especially, the coaching staff, as they prepare to move Mookie Betts to shortstop next season.
"We locked Edman up. He's a guy that can play shortstop, center field, (and) second base."
Edman was thrown into different positions during the course of the 2024 season with the Dodgers. He played 24 games in center field, 18 games at shortstop and one at second base since arriving from St. Louis.
Tommy Edman gets rewarded for stellar play
After a sensational half-season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, super utilityman and 2024 NLCS MVP Tommy Edman was re-signed by the organization. The Dodgers and Edman agreed a five-year, $74 million deal with a sixth-year option.
"The Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed on a contract extension with IF/OF Tommy Edman for five years for $74M through the 2029 season with a club option for the 2030 season." - @ Los Angeles Dodgers on X
The Team Korea star was a vital cog in both sides of the ball for the title-winning Dodgers.
In the crucial NLCS against the New York Mets, Edman was on fire, as he posted a .407/.393/.603 slash line with an OPS of 1.022. He hit a sole home run but delivered 11 base hits, 11 runs batted in, scored five runs and struck out just four times in 27 at-bats.
