The New York Yankees are reportedly in talks to acquire pitcher Jack Flaherty from the Detroit Tigers before the deadline. The team has recently been having pitching woes and is looking to add reinforcements to strengthen the rotation in the latter part of the season.
The Bronx Bombers could part ways with Nestor Cortes before July 30 if they land Flaherty. The team's starter has underperformed in his 22 starts this season with a 4-9 record, 4.13 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 116 strikeouts.
Flaherty would be a decent replacement for Cortes in the starting rotation. According to insider Bob Nightengale, New York is in "extensive talks" with the Tigers about the starter's availability.
"The New York Yankees are in extensive trade talks for Tigers starter Jack Flaherty, and plan to trade starter Nestor Cortes if they land Flaherty."
Flaherty has had a good season so far. He has made 18 starts this year, with a 7-2 record, an ERA of 2.95, a WHIP of 2.96, and 133 strikeouts. He could be a good starter option for the Bombers as they look to fight their way out of their recent slump and get to the postseason.
However, a trade for the 28-year-old right-hand pitcher won't be easy as other teams are also keeping tabs on him.
Yankees acquire Jazz Chisholm Jr. in trade from Marlins
The New York Yankees have acquired the Miami Marlins in a trade. In exchange, the Marlins received three prospects in Triple-A catcher Agustin Ramirez, infielder Jared Serna, and rookie ball infielder/outfielder Abrahan Ramirez.
Chisholm has had a pretty decent season so far, having played 101 games for the Marlins, hitting .248, with an OPS of .726, 13 HRs, and 50 RBIs.
Chisholm, who played center field for the Marlins, started at third base on Monday against the Phillies. It's the first time he's ever played in that position in the majors.
