Baltimore Orioles' Jackson Holliday, San Diego Padres' Jackson Merrill and Milwaukee Brewers' Jackson Chourio have a lot more in common than just their names. All three prospects debuted this season and now hold important spots in their respective lineups with their teams headed toward the postseason.
There has been extensive debate throughout this year about who is the best "Jackson 3" rookie. On the "Baseball Today" podcast with Chris Rose and Trevor Plouffe, Rose argued that the comparisons between the three Jacksons are not required at all.
Rose pointed out that to elevate one of them, analysts and fans have spoken negatively about the other two. He also emphasized that everyone in baseball should be grateful for their debut seasons.
"I just think the question: Jackson, Jackson Jackson, who you going to take for your career is something fantastic. Now what I hate when people do this in discussion they want to drag somebody else down in order to build their candidate up..."
"Don't tear those kids down. Let's be appreciative of the fact that we have three guys all named Jackson who all started their big league careers at age 20. Can you imagine starting at age 20 and then all of a sudden excelling to playing a huge part in a playoff contender, cause that is exactly what is happening right now," Rose added.
Jackson Merrill has emerged as improbable leader of the "Jackson Three"
If one were to compare the stats, there is a clear winner for the "best rookie debate." Jackson Holliday has found it tough in the majors this year, having been optioned back to the minors before earning a recall. Jackson Chourio has had a solid rookie season for the Brewers but it is Padres' Jackson Merrill who is currently leading his star-studded team to the playoffs.
Although Merrill was never a No.1 or No.2 prospect like the other two, it can be said that he has had the best debut. The center fielder is the frontrunner for the National League Rookie of the Year award with Pittsburgh Pirates' Paul Skenes as his biggest competition. Merrill is hitting .290 this season with 82 RBIs including 22 home runs and 16 stolen bases.
