The Boston Red Sox made the headlines on the final day of the MLB Winter Meetings as the AL East team struck a trade with the Chicago White Sox for All-Star ace Garret Crochet on Wednesday.
The White Sox received prospects from Boston as part of the deal for their ace. One of the top 25 prospects in the MLB pipeline, Kyle Teel, Braden Montgomery, Chase Meidroth and Wikelman Gonzalez went to the White Sox.
Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran, who had a breakthrough season with Boston in 2024, made his feelings known on Garret Crochet's signing. Duran shared a picture in his Instagram story featuring himself with Crochet and Tanner Houck from the 2024 All-Star game. Duran captioned the story with a 'Smiling Face With Horns' emoji.
Crotchet will be leading the Red Sox rotation with Houck, who earned his maiden All-Star nod in 2024.
Garret Crochet's trade to Boston comes on the back of the Red Sox reportedly missing out on high-profile free agents. The Red were one of the teams pursuing superstar slugger Juan Soto, who signed a $765,0.0,000 deal with the Mets.
Another top target that reportedly slipped from the Red Sox's grasp was All-Star pitcher Max Fried. The former Atlanta Braves World Series winner signed a $218,000,000 contract with the New York Yankees on Monday.
Although the Red Sox were heavily interested in Fried, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow praised Crochet on Wednesday.
“We feel like we got a legitimate number one starter in Garrett, left-handed, ton of swing and miss, massive strikeouts, and feels like the best is still in front of him. So we're excited about what he brings. And obviously, we needed to trade really good players in order to be able to do this. But that's the cost right now and we're very much focused on what we were able to get."
Jarren Duran sweats in the offseason after breakthrough year with Red Sox
Jarren Duran had a season to remember for the Red Sox in 2024 and the promising outfielder seemingly carried Boston's offense in several games. His heroics earned him a maiden All-Star call-up, and Duran made it count by hitting a go-ahead home run in the American League's victory over the National League.
He was named the 2024 All-Star MVP and is looking to build on his promising season. He shared his intense workout routines in the offseason via Instagram and is gearing up for a postseason push with the Red Sox next year.
